And the Pope wore wool …

As the conclave to elect a new Pope gets underway today I was fascinated to learn about the papal connection with wool – the Pallium is a narrow band woven from white lambswool and adorned with six black crosses. It is worn around the neck of every pope – a y shaped scarf in effect. The scarf is woven by Trapist monks from the fleece of lambs which are presented to the Pope on Jan 21st the feast of St Agnes. I was brought up
a catholic and loved to see the embroidery and detail in vestments – my mum a talented textile designer even created vestments for our parish priest which were very beautiful. Every fabric has a story doesn’t it !!!
